Whitlingham Water Activity Day - 16th July 2011

We certainly picked the right day for water activities! It must have been one of the worst days for rain this year, but it certainly didn't put us off - we figured we were gonna get wet anyway :)

After kitting ourselves out with the appropriate gear, we tried our hand at Katakanus or Kayaking and had great fun paddling across Whitlingham Broad for a couple of hours.

When we'd finished that, Francis served up a superb BBQ lunch (cooked under canvas in torrential rain) - we filled up on burgers and hot dogs which were absolutely delicious.

After lunch it was time to try our hand at sailing - once we were on the broad it was time to show how we really could sail.

Even though the weather was atrocious, we had a great time on the broad - good food, good company, good times.

Thank you so much to Francis King - committe member - for a fabulous day out.

Snowtubing - 14th November 2010 and 6th February 2011

The Diabetes Youth Group ran snow tubing mornings at the dry ski slopes at Trowse. The weather on both occasions was beautifully sunny, making a change to the rain we could have had. As many had not been tubing before it was a fantastic experience and there was plenty of screaming and laughing!

We even built up our confidence to go down in groups of fours!

Thank you to Gail Howes who organised the event.

Quasar Laser Quest - 19th Sept 2010

On Sunday 19th Sept, thirty people had great fun running around shooting each other. In a mist filled room, lights flashing, armed with a laser weapon we were on a mission to zap enemy players and shoot their base whilst at the same time defending ours.

A great time was had by all; many thanks to Gail for once again organising a fantastic event.

Southern Comfort Mississippi Paddle Boat Trip - Sept 2010

On a fine Autumn morning a group of around 50 intrepid sailors embarked on a two hour cruise, sailing from Horning along the river Bure out to Ranworth Broad and back.

We passed through some lovely scenery, spotting rare wildlife and admiring some fine riverside properties, and were even lucky enough to come across a Norfolk Wherry.

The skipper gave an entertaining and knowledgeable commentary throughout; our thanks to him and the crew for a memorable trip, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Activity Day - July 2010 - Eaton Vale Activity Centre

The weather was kind to us on 11th July, as nine children (and three dads) spent a fun day at Eaton Vale Activity Centre, near Norwich. In the morning children overcame their fear, and fathers hid theirs, as we climbed walls and abseiled down them. In the afternoon we tried “kayaking” – which for most of us meant swimming fully clothed in the River Yare, and finished off with a bit of archery, where it soon became apparent that most of us will not be auditioning for the next series of Robin Hood. Everybody seemed to have a good time, and this was largely thanks to EVAC’s excellent, good-humoured and patient staff. Our thanks to them for making it a great day and especially to Francis King, Committee Member for organising the event.

Stompers Den Fun Session for Children aged 4 to 10 years - Tuesday 1st June.  11am to 1.30pm

There was 17 turned up for this really fun event at Stompers thoroughly enjoyed by all and we will be organising another one soon so check out our forthcoming events.

Thanks to Tammy Clarke our latest member of the committee for organising the event.

Go Karting & Barbeque - 18th April 2010 - Cromer

In April The Youth Group organised a Go-karting/BBQ event. Battling for pole position, the kids raced against each other in small groups. Although small, the go-karts were very powerful and were a real challenge to handle. The children learned essential techniques for cornering and braking and got to grips with the track. The day gathered pace to the ultimate finale of a medal presentation and a prize BBQ to boot. Thanks Daren for your organisation.

Snowtubing Whittlingham Lane Ski Slope - Sunday, February 28, 2010

Christmas Party 2009

Snowtubing - Norwich - November 2009

On 15th November a group of brave young men and women faced the cold winter temperatures for a morning of snow tubing on the dry ski slopes at Trowse. We were each armed with something which resembles a thick rubber ring and after reaching the top, we all slid back down at racing speeds. Once we were more confident we went down in groups or 2, 3, 4 and even once the whole group! We had a great time as always and we look forward to the next event! Thank you to Gail for organising it.

Quasar Elite - 20th September 09

This was such a fantastic event and was enjoyed by the 28 kids and several adults who attended.  2 hours and 3 exciting games of quasar with cold drinks and pizzas in between to refresh and re-invigorate everyone.  Thanks so much to Gail Howes for organising this event again - a real success.

MAY 2009 - HILLTOPS ACTIVITY WEEKEND FOR 13 TO 16 YEAR OLDS

May 09 -  Family Day at Bewilderwood

A really great day was had by all at Bewilderwood. We had around 85 people attend the Youth Group Event.  The kids burnt off loads of energy exploring the woods, climbing the activities which included slides, zip wires, climbing, mazes, boat rides.  We had a picnic all together and then off for more fun building dens in the forest - a superb day out!

On the 15th February the Diabetes Youth Group ran an exciting day

We had a light lunch then we hit the pool and the afternoon was

spent enjoying the slides, rapids wave pool and eating ice cream.

The day was enjoyed by all and a massive thanks to Sue White for organising it!

Youth Group Christmas Party 2008

On Saturday 6th December we held our annual Christmas Party

at the Gas Social Club. The afternoon went well with a finger

buffet, disco and entertainment from Steve Pizey

It was a great chance to have some family Christmas fun and also to socialise with other parent and children

from the group.

A raffle was drawn towards the end of the afternoon with a top

prize of a Nintendo Wii and second prize of an i-pod Nano.

There was a visit from Father Christmas who gave out presents

to all the children. The event was a huge success and one we

will be repeating next year!!

Thanks to all the committee who helped organise the event.

November 08- Snow Tubing at Trowse

On the 23rd November the Youth Group ran a Snow Tubing morning

at the dry ski slopes at Trowse.  As the morning dawned, everything

outside turned white, for the snow tubing we actually had snow!

Everyone was explained how to use the rings and the safety rules

and then we all went speeding down the slope on our own to start

with then in groups of 4 or 5.  The morning was really enjoyable

and fun was had by all and was a new experience for many.

Thanks to Gail Howes who organised and ran the morning - certainly one to do again!

Summer Ball - June 2008 - Dunston Hall

The evening kicked off at 7pm at Dunston Hall. Pre dinner drinks were available on arrival, as well as Prize Balloons; 30% contained prizes such as a DVD player, a massage or vouchers etc. The rest had a consolation raffle ticket for the grand draw.

The three course meal consisted of crown of melon, followed by chicken in red wine sauce and finished off with a very tasty white chocolate mousse with dark chocolate sauce. The room looked fantastic as most tables were adorned with the pink prize balloons.
During coffee the auction began.

Rob Scott our chairman gave a brief introduction about the charity and how the money raised goes to helping the people who matter most, our kids. Our auctioneer for the night was Steve Minns. He did a fantastic job not only in raising money, (over £1800), but giving gentle persuasion to bid and keeping all the rabble in order.

We had 14 auction lots, these included a dinner party for 6 in your own home, prepared and cooked by John Kenny, winner of Britain's best dish 2007, along with Erica Paganini, from Tasty Pastry. We had one days donated by David Smith Building, and a Helicopter Underwater Escape donated by Petans.

With the auction over it was time for music. The Soul Band were superb, playing a lot of the old soul classics. The floor did not clear for the whole time they played. They even had a few impromptu backing singers, some of the party goers decided they fancied a shot at the rock life style and got up on stage. It was very entertaining.

During the bands interval it was time for the Balloon pop and Grand prize draw. With a huge bang the balloons popped some people being luckier than others. The prize draw had 3rd prize (an ipod shuffle) and 2nd prize (a camcorder) winners there on the night, 1st prize a 40” wide screen TV went to Carol from North Walsham, luck lady.

The band played for another hour, then Nick the DJ took over. The dance floor was packed the whole time. Then alas, the clock struck 2am and the night was unfortunately over.

The total raised on the night was £4800. Thankyou to all the prize contributors and everyone who came on the night and look forward to the next Ball in summer 2010.

PLAYBARN - 15th March, 2008 - Poringland

The Youth Group held another trip to The Play Barn on March 15th which again was well attended.

We find this party ideal for any young newly diagnosed children up to the age of seven

While the kids are having fun the parents can get to know each other and discuss how they manage their child’s diabetes. We have learnt from previous visits parents exchange their contact numbers and keep in touch with each other for future reference.
